Privacy Policy

Tapeflix was designed with privacy as a first principle, not an afterthought. Your videos are securely uploaded to our servers (AWS S3) solely to create your episodes — encrypted at rest and in transit. To analyse them, parts of your clips are processed by the service providers listed in section 4. We never sell your data and never use it for advertising.

1. Who we are

Tapeflix ("Tapeflix", "we", or "the app") is a software product that transforms users' personal videos into AI-curated episodes, streamable to a TV. The website is accessible at tapeflix.com.

2. Data we collect

2.1 Waitlist

When you join the waitlist, we collect:

  • Name — to personalise communications
  • Email address — to notify you when the app is available

This data is processed through Formspree (formspree.io), a third-party form service.

2.2 In-app usage

When you use the app, we collect:

  • Video content — selected clips are uploaded to our servers (AWS S3) for episode processing, analysis, and assembly, encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS).
  • Video metadata — local identifier, filename, creation date, duration, and file type, used to select, group, and organise episodes
  • Video location — a video’s own metadata may carry the coordinates of where it was filmed. These are turned into a place name on your own device, using Apple’s geocoder, and only that name — “Estoril”, for example — is stored, to place your episodes. We do not store the coordinates, and the app never asks for access to your phone’s location.
  • Account and authentication data — name, email, user identifier, Sign in with Apple/Google or email/password, access token, and verification state
  • Subscription data — subscription status, purchased product, and expiration dates received through the App Store/RevenueCat
  • Push notification token — used to notify you when an episode is ready
  • Feedback and preferences — NPS score, optional notes, episode likes/dislikes, and optional names for people in videos
  • People data in videos — face detection and matching happen on your device. If you choose to identify someone, we store the name you enter and that person's clip associations to personalise and group episodes. These names may be included in requests sent to the AI providers listed below; we do not upload biometric templates or face feature prints.

2.3 What we do not do with your data

  • We never sell data to third parties
  • We do not use your videos or data for advertising
  • We share the content of your videos only with the service providers listed in section 4, and only to create your episodes

3. How we use your data

  • To provide the episode creation service (AI-based video analysis and organisation)
  • To communicate with you about waitlist status and Tapeflix updates
  • To improve the quality and stability of the application
  • To comply with applicable legal obligations

4. Third-party sharing

Tapeflix uses the following service providers to process data:

  • Amazon Web Services (S3) — storage of uploaded clips and finished episodes
  • Railway — hosting of our servers and database
  • Google Gemini — AI analysis of each uploaded clip (video and audio), including a transcript of what is said
  • Twelve Labs — for subscribers, additional AI video analysis of their strongest clips; those clips are uploaded to Twelve Labs and deleted there together with the original clips (see section 5)
  • Anthropic Claude API — grouping moments into episodes and writing titles, using clip descriptions and metadata, including any names you gave to people
  • Resend — sending sign-in verification codes by email
  • RevenueCat — subscription management and App Store events
  • Expo — push notification delivery
  • Apple and Google — authentication, when you choose those login methods
  • Formspree — waitlist form management
  • Vercel — website hosting and cookieless aggregate visit statistics

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with third parties for advertising or marketing.

5. Data retention

  • Waitlist: data is kept until app launch or until a removal request, whichever comes first
  • Original video clips: used solely to generate episodes; normally deleted from our servers after the operational processing and cleanup window, and always deleted when the account is closed
  • Generated episodes (free account): kept for 90 days from account creation
  • Generated episodes (paid account): kept while the subscription is active; 30-day grace period after cancellation
  • Account closure: all data is permanently deleted within 30 days of the request
  • App usage data: deleted within 30 days of account closure

6. Your rights (GDPR)

If you reside in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the following rights:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Rectification — correct inaccurate data
  • Erasure — request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Objection — object to processing in certain circumstances
  • Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Withdrawal of consent — at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing

7. Cookies and tracking

The tapeflix.com website does not use tracking cookies or advertising pixels. We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page visits in aggregate; it sets no cookies and does not identify visitors. To test two versions of the home page, we store one cookie (tf_v) recording which version you saw, for 90 days, so you keep seeing the same one. It contains no personal data.

8. Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, loss, or disclosure. Videos are stored on AWS S3 with encryption at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS). Authentication tokens are stored securely with restricted access.

9. International transfers

Some of our service providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. We ensure such transfers take place under appropriate mechanisms (e.g. Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission).

10. Minors

Tapeflix is not intended for users under 16 years of age. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you become aware that a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us immediately.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy periodically. We will notify registered users of significant changes by email. The date of last update is shown at the top of this page.
